Sway Calloway Career

RAPPER:

Sway rose to prominence as a rapper and b-boy while playing on Pier 39 in San Francisco. After high school, he linked up with DJ King Tech, and the two performed at numerous San Francisco Bay Area venues. They also issued independent albums. A major label record deal with Giant Records followed. In 1990, the album Concrete Jungle landed them a gig co-hosting their own program on radio station KMEL. Another album, Back 2 Basics, was released in 2005 by Sway and Tech’s own record company, Bolo Entertainment, which is distributed by Universal Music.

RADIO CAREER:

The Wake Up Show featured music and interviews with both established and emerging hip-hop artists. The show grew extremely popular, and it began simulcasting to Los Angeles on KKBT in 1993 and Chicago on WEJM by 1996. The rappers who made their broadcasting debuts on the show include Ras Kass, Chino XL, and Eminem. Sway soon began presenting his own morning drive-time show on the radio. The show’s popularity helped Sway and Tech sign another record deal, this time with Interscope Records. In 1999, their album This or That peaked at number 30 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number one on the Top Heatseekers chart.

Sway broadcasts a weekday morning program on SiriusXM’s Shade 45 channel, which features Eminem. “Sway in the Morning” premiered on Shade 45 (SiriusXM channel 45) on Monday, July 18, 2011, and airs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon ET. The second week he was there, Ludacris called in and discussed his music and film career. In a 2012 interview with The Source, Sway discussed his experiences with satellite and terrestrial radio. Kanye West arrived as a guest on his show in November 2013 and had an epic tantrum on air, spouting iconic remarks such as “You ain’t got the answers Sway, You ain’t been doing the education”.

TELEVISION CAREER:

Sway was approached by MTV in 2000 to work as a correspondent for the network, where he became a regular reporter for music video shows and news specials such as Total Request Live and the hip-hop music video show Direct Effect. Because MTV’s studios are located in New York City, King Tech and The Wake Up Show supported Sway’s transfer. Sway’s appearance on MTV increased the radio show’s popularity. As a result, the show aired short on MTV in January 2004. Sway and Tech also have a successful mixtape series that includes freestyles from the broadcast. Sway recorded the spoken introduction for Super Bowl XXXVIII’s halftime show.

In September 2005, Sway declined to renew his contract with MTV. However, in 2006, Sway secured a new contract that included the option to bring new ideas to MTV, becoming the first TV celebrity since Carson Daly to do so (Daly declined a comparable arrangement). He created the potential to produce programming with King Tech for MTV and other Viacom channels, as well as continuing to host shows. He hosted the network’s coverage of Michael Jackson’s death. Sway featured in a cameo role as “Sway” in the animated series The Boondocks episode “The Story Of Gangstalicious” on December 11, 2005. In 2007, he featured as a guest on Short Circuitz, an MTV sketch comedy show.
