After starting as a reporter for Fortune in 1984, he was elevated to associate editor. Serwer worked as a senior writer for Fortune from 1995 until 1998. He became well-known in 1997 as a result of his then-novel internet column “Street Life,” which detailed the characters and tales of Wall Street. “In the May 22, 2000, issue of The New Yorker, James Collins wrote, ‘Achaea had Homer, the Spanish Civil War had Hemingway, California had the Beach Boys, and now our hyperactive stock market has its own poet-singer—Andy Serwer.” Later on, the column changed to become “Captain’s Blog.”He has penned several Fortune cover stories, including ones featuring cofounders of Oracle and Microsoft Bill Gates and John Chambers, the CEO of Cisco.
Serwer won the title of Business Journalist of the Year in 2000 thanks to NewsBios, which described him as “possibly the nation’s top multimedia talent, juggling the roles of serious journalist, astute commentator, and occasional court jester with ease.” In addition to co-hosting CNN’s “In The Money,” Serwer was a frequent contributor to “American Morning.” He has also written for Time, Sports Illustrated, Politico, and SLAM Magazine and appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s The Today Show, and CBS This Morning. Serwer joined Yahoo Finance in 2015 as editor-in-chief and left in December 2022. At the end of January 2023, Serwer started working as an editor at large for Barron’s. In 2021, Serwer was given the New York Financial Writers’ Association’s 45th Elliott V. Bell Award. Serwer is a trustee on the Bowdoin College board of trustees.
