Marvin Humes The X Factor
UFO auditioned for the fifth season of The X Factor in 2008, but had to change their name because it was already in use by another group, so they used the moniker JLS (an abbreviation for Jack the Lad Swing, a style invented with Tracklacers a few months before).
Following the elimination of girl groups Bad Lashes and Girlband in weeks one and two, respectively, JLS were Louis Walsh’s final remaining act in the competition, however throughout the live events, the judges proclaimed them the best band to emerge from The X Factor. In week 7, JLS and Rachel Hylton finished in the bottom two. However, they were able to survive thanks to votes from Walsh, Cheryl Cole, and Simon Cowell.
Cowell claimed after his deciding vote that JLS did not deserve to be in the bottom two. In week 8, JLS performed “…Baby One More Time” and received negative feedback from two of the four judges, with Cowell saying “at the moment you’re out,” but after their second performance, “You Light Up My Life,” Cowell commented that they were “back in the race” and could “have a hit record” with the performance.
In week nine, JLS performed “Umbrella” and “I’m Already There”. Cowell then predicted that they’d win the competition. They advanced to the final and sang their own version of the winner’s song, “Hallelujah,” alongside fellow contestant Alexandra Burke. The public voted for the second time that night, and Burke won, with JLS coming in second. They were the fourth band to reach the finals. Following their victory on The X Factor, Cowell’s record label, Syco, planned to sign JLS; however, Cowell rescinded the offer, choosing instead to focus on Alexandra Burke. JLS’s management believed the band would be a good fit for Epic Records, with whom they signed a recording contract in January 2009.
