Walker began writing on film and comic books in the 1990s, publishing articles on his website and the zine BadAzz MoFo, which he launched in 1996. He eventually began writing for comic book publishers and magazines, including Dark Horse Comics and Giant Robot. Walker co-wrote the comic novel Shaft: A Complicated Man for Dynamite Entertainment in 2015. It received the Glyph Award for Story of the Year and was nominated for the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comic Books. That year, he also wrote the novel Shaft’s Revenge, which was first serialized and released as a digital download to match the Shaft comics. Walker and Sanford Greene penned the 2016 reboot of Marvel Comics’ Power Man and Iron Fist.

Walker and Brian Michael Bendis co-created the character Naomi McDuffie, who debuted in the DC Comics book Naomi in 2018. Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship produced the television series of the same name, which aired on The CW. Walker established Solid Comix, a comics publisher funded entirely through crowdsourcing in 2019. He published original comic novels through Solid Comix, including Bitter Root, a collaboration with Greene and Chuck Brown, and The Hated.
