Dillon auditioned for the first season of the late-night variety television show Saturday Night Live in 1975, and while she was passed over by producer Lorne Michaels, she did perform her “Talent Night at the Convent” performance on the show’s third episode, which aired October 25, 1975. When Dillon auditioned for the show’s sixth season in 1980, she beat Mercedes Ruehl for the final female cast member spot.

Dillon has appeared on Broadway as Agnes in the 1974 revival of Gypsy starring Angela Lansbury; in the 1975 revival of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth; in the 1980 stage version of Harold and Maude; and as Mickey in the 1983 Gershwin musical My One and Only, starring Tommy Tune and Twiggy, for which she received a Tony Award nomination for Featured Actress in a Musical. She later performed as a replacement cast member in the 2003 Broadway production Enchanted April.

Dillon made her film debut in Saturday Night Fever as Doreen, who asks John Travolta’s character Tony if she can wipe his forehead. Dillon voiced Meadow Morn in the 1983 animated television show The Magic of Herself the Elf. Other television performances include Judy in the 1987 comedy series Dr. Science and a cameo on the Night Court episode “Educating Rhonda” in 1988.

Dillon first appeared as Toby Pedalbee, Martin Tupper’s (Brian Benben) faithful sidekick, in the 1990 television series Dream On. She played Roseanne Barr in the 1994 made-for-television film Roseanne: An Unauthorized Biography. Dillon provided voiceovers for the 2002 animated feature Ice Age.
