He is a senior editor at In These Times magazine and a Chicago Tribune op-ed columnist. Muwakkil specializes in writing about African-American issues, Middle Eastern politics, and US foreign policy. He is an Open Society Institute Crime and Communities Media Fellow and teaches a seminar on race, media, and politics for the Associated Colleges of the Midwest’s Urban Studies Program. Muwakkil joined the United States Air Force after graduating from Linden High School in 1964. After five years as an administration specialist in Germany, he returned to the United States in 1969 and enrolled at Rutgers University, where he graduated in 1973. He immediately joined the Black Panther Party after his release. Muwakkil began his professional career as a reporter for the Associated Press in Newark, New Jersey.
He later became a member of the Nation of Islam. He worked as a copy editor for Muhammad Speaks and its successor, Bilalian News, before becoming managing editor. He is now a former member of that movement. Muwakkil moved to Chicago in 1983 and joined the staff of In These Times, as well as contributing to the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune. On WVON, Chicago’s historic Black radio station, he hosts “The Salim Muwakkil” show. Muwakkil is on the boards of the Progressive Media Project and Public Square in Chicago. He has previously taught at Columbia College, Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
