Ant Anstead is an English television presenter, motor specialist, car builder, designer, and artist best known for co-hosting Channel 4’s For the Love of Cars with Philip Glenister. Anstead replaced Edd China as co-host of Wheeler Dealers alongside Mike Brewer in 2017.

He was born in Ely, Cambridgeshire, and moved to Hertfordshire with his family when he was ten years old. He attended Richard Hale School in Hertford before moving on to Haileybury School for his A-levels. Anstead built his first kit automobile at the age of sixteen and promptly sold it for a profit. He then purchased an MG, which sparked his interest in automobiles.

Anstead was offered a five-year contract in 2017 to relocate to the United States with his family for Wheeler Dealers USA and replace co-host and close friend Edd China, who had decided to return to the UK.

Three years later, production was returned to the UK without Anstead, who has a small boy, Hudson, with his previous partner Christina Hall, with whom he shares custody.

Anstead joined Hertfordshire Constabulary in 1999 and was initially stationed at Bishop’s Stortford. He transferred to Cheshunt police station before joining the Tactical Firearms Team (TFU) at Welwyn Garden City. During his early police career, Anstead guarded convicted railway murderer John Duffy in a police safe house for three days. He was later awarded two commendations for deeds of bravery.

Anstead left the police force in 2005 to pursue a career as a vehicle manufacturer. He began making and refurbishing cars for clients, as well as creating one-of-a-kind entertainment vehicles. Anstead played semi-professional football for nearly 15 years, appearing in over 700 Ryman League matches and transitioning from goalie to striker, becoming the only player to earn Ryman league promotions in both positions. In 2014, Anstead founded his own television production firm and launched his own show, The World’s Most Expensive Cars.

He was invited in 2014 to co-host a new Channel 4 automotive show with British actor Philip Glenister.Anstead has since presented a number of television shows, including BBC Two’s live show Building Cars Live, which he co-hosted in 2015 with James May and Kate Humble. Anstead hosts the live stages of several automobile events in the UK, as well as after-dinner speaking and motivational speaking in schools and for charity. In his 2019 TV show Ant Anstead Master Mechanic, Anstead hand-builds an homage to the Alfa Romeo 158 using a variety of components ranging from spare parts to donor cars. Anstead collaborates with a variety of automotive personalities and professionals on the show.

Anstead, in addition to being Master Mechanic, is also a part of the new “World’s Greatest Cars” series.
