Anderson began their career in journalism as a film critic for the Los Angeles Times, where they worked for four years before leaving in 2018. They later worked as the director of culture and entertainment for Out Magazine. Anderson began writing for the queer publication Xtra Magazine as editor-at-large in January 2020. Their work focuses on race, gender, the LGBTQ community, and pop culture. They have advocated for greater racial diversity in LGBTQ media. They’ve written for the New York Times, NBC News, BuzzFeed News, NPR, The Daily Beast, and KJZZ, among others. Anderson was nominated for two GLAAD Media Awards in 2021 for two articles: “Why Billy Porter is a National Treasure” and “It’s Time for a New Tipping Point for Transgender Folks.

Anderson will join the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Credentials Committee, which selects new members, in September 2021. Beginning in June 2020, they hosted the EW podcast Untold Stories: Beyond the Binary, which focused on nonbinary identity in culture and media. Since 2020, they have co-hosted the Maximum Fun culture and politics podcast FANTI with Jarrett Hill. Anderson is a co-host of the Crooked Media news podcast What A Day as of 2022.
