She started at The Grio as Deputy Editor in 2016 and was promoted to Vice President of Digital Content in 2019. In 2019, Alford began appearing on CNN on a regular basis. Alford co-directed and executive produced the documentary “Afro-Latinx Revolution: Puerto Rico” with Defend Puerto Rico. The film delves into the history and culture of Puerto Rico’s Afro-Latino community, highlighting the experiences of Black Puerto Ricans who have historically faced discrimination and marginalization. The documentary was purchased by Freestyle Digital Media, a division of Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios, and is now available on Amazon Prime Video. Alford has worked to bring attention to a variety of issues affecting marginalized communities. In 2023, she gave three scholarships to aspiring high school journalists from underrepresented communities in her hometown of Syracuse, New York.She was also a Syracuse University Journalist-in-Residence. She is a lupus advocate who has spoken out about her experience with the autoimmune disease.
