Wayans rose to prominence as the host and creator of the Fox sketch comedy series In Living Color, which aired from 1990 to 1994. He has produced, directed, or written several films, beginning with Hollywood Shuffle in 1987, which he co-wrote. Most of his films have starred him and one or more of his siblings. Scary Movie (2000), directed by Wayans, was the highest-grossing film directed by an African American until it was surpassed by Tim Story’s Fantastic Four in 2005. He hosted the talk show The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show from 1997 to 1998. He was most recently a judge on the eighth season of Last Comic Standing.
Wayans met Robert Townsend, who helped him learn about the comedy business, during his first set at The Improv in New York. When Wayans moved to Los Angeles in 1980, Townsend and Wayans drove there together. Wayans worked as an actor there. He played a soldier on the television series For Love and Honor and an NFL linebacker on Hill Street Blues. Wayans was a costar and cowriter in the film Hollywood Shuffle, which Townsend wrote, directed, and starred in. The success of the film enabled him to raise funds for I’m Gonna Git You Sucka. The Fox Broadcasting Company approached Wayans about hosting his own show. Wayans desired to create a variety show akin to Saturday Night Live.
Fox gave Wayans a lot of creative license with the show, though Fox executives were concerned about the show’s content before it premiered. Wayans created, wrote, and starred in the sketch comedy television series In Living Color, which aired on Fox from 1990 to 1994. Wayans is a vegetarian who advocated for the diet in a public service announcement for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in 2006.
