Kerley began his broadcasting career as the news director for San Luis Obispo’s KCPR-FM. From 1978 to 1981, he worked at nearby KCOY in Santa Maria as an 11 p.m. anchor and 6 p.m. sports anchor (you can see him in blooper tapes from that era on YouTube). He subsequently spent three years at KTVB in Boise, Idaho, before moving to Seattle for fifteen years. He began his career at KIRO-TV in 1983, then moved to competitor KING-TV in 1986 for nearly six years before returning to KIRO in 1998. Kerley joined WBBM-TV in Chicago in November 1998. He took over as the station’s principal news anchor in early 2001, anchoring the 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts.
Kerley joined ABC News in February 2004 as an overnight anchor and reporter for World News Now, World News This Morning, and ABC News Now. “I consider ABC to be the premier broadcast journalism company in the country, possibly the world,” he told pals, according to a February 11, 2004, Chicago Sun-Times article. “An exciting adventure awaits.” Kerley has flown to Baghdad, covered Hurricane Katrina, and covered the 2005 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting since joining ABC News. Kerley joined ABC News as a general assignment journalist in 2004. He was named ABC News’ Senior Transportation Correspondent on July 25, 2017.
