Bart began working as an executive at Paramount Pictures in 1967, eventually reaching the position of vice president in charge of production; his friendship with Robert Evans was described in Evans’ memoirs The Kid Stays in the Picture. He appeared in films such as Rosemary’s Baby (1968), True Grit (1969), Harold and Maude (1971), and others. After eight years at Paramount, he moved on to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as senior vice president of production and president of Lorimar Productions, where he worked on films such as Being There (1979) and The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981). Bart also co-produced films like Fun with Dick and Jane (1977) and Islands in the Stream (1977). In 1971, he also penned the screenplay for the film Making It.

In 1989, he became Variety’s editor-in-chief. Bart appointed Tim Grey as his successor as editor in 2007, with the understanding that he would continue as a columnist, blogger, and consultant. In April 2009, it was reported that Bart will be promoted to the role of “vice president and editorial director,” which was dubbed “Boffo No More: Bart Up and Out at Variety” online. According to Los Angeles Magazine, Bart sold the rights to an 86-page novella titled Power Play, which is about “a power struggle between established casino owners and Indian tribes,” to Paramount Pictures, where his friend and business acquaintance Robert Evans was a producer. Bart revealed that he “probably spent a weekend” adapting the novella from the 108-page script Crossroads. He was the executive producer and screenwriter for the HBO television documentary film Boffo! Tinseltown’s Bombs and Blockbusters (2006). He is a member of Penske Media Company’s board of advisors.
