Bill Andriette Books- Career

He was the spokesman for the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) in 1996. Andriette stated in a 1996 interview with The Boston Phoenix, “I realized I was gay when I was 12.” He joined NAMBLA at the age of 15 and was a member of the Steering Committee by the age of 17. He was the editor of the NAMBLA Bulletin for six years. He disagreed with some previous NAMBLA directors on the legalization of what is today deemed statutory rape, finding potential for compromise with government and cultural issues. He was disappointed that the LGBT rights movement has shunned NAMBLA because he saw moral criticism of pedophiles as a “reactionary ideology that the gay movement has embraced.”

During the 1993 International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) controversy, he defended NAMBLA’s membership in ILGA, and to a lesser extent NAMBLA’s place in the gay rights movement, by claiming that “‘the main tradition’ of homosexuality” is consistent with opposing statutory rape laws. He appeared in the NAMBLA documentary Chicken Hawk: Men Who Love Boys in 1994, when he stated how his work with NAMBLA gave him an outlet for his sexual attraction to prepubescent young boys under the age of consent. He was a runner-up for a Sex Positive Journalism Award (Sexies) in 2008 for an essay published in The Guide titled “Tipping Point for Gay Sex?”
