He has worked as a book critic for The New York Times as well as a foreign correspondent in Europe and Asia for Time magazine and The New York Times.Bernstein joined Time magazine’s staff in 1973, when he was assigned to write about Asia. He established the magazine’s first bureau in the People’s Republic of China in 1979, and he was the first Beijing bureau chief. He joined The New York Times in 1982 as the United Nations Bureau Chief, Paris Bureau Chief, National Cultural Correspondent, book critic, and Berlin Bureau Chief. Bernstein’s debut book, From the Center of the Earth: The Search for the Truth About China (1982), was selected one of The New York Times’ “Notable Books of the Year 1982” and cemented his position as a China expert. The New York Times named The Coming Conflict with China (1997) one of the “Notable Books of the Year 1997.”
