He held a variety of writing and Internet jobs in Hong Kong and New York City before joining The Wall Street Journal as a news assistant, and then as a reporter. He covered the Florida election recount in 2000 and the September 11 assaults on the Pentagon as a journalist in the paper’s Washington bureau. He was assigned to cover the Iraq invasion for The Wall Street Journal in 2003. This had an impact on the writing of his first novel, Last One In (2007). Kulish became a member of the Times’ editorial board in September 2005. There, he authored articles about business, culture, Hurricane Katrina, and New Orleans’ reconstruction.
He was the newspaper’s Berlin bureau chief, covering Central and Eastern Europe, from August 2007 to May 2013. Kulish and his colleague Souad Mekhennet discovered the hiding site of the most-wanted Nazi fugitive Aribert Heim in Cairo, where he died in hiding in 1992, while based in Berlin. He and his co-author for The Eternal Nazi (2014), Mekhennet, were later detained by Egyptian secret police while documenting the 2011 Egyptian uprising. From June 2013 to March 2014, he worked as a foreign journalist in East Africa. He covered South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and other countries. He and other New York Times reporters published numerous in-depth articles on the Germanwings Flight 9525 plane crash, ISIS financing, and other topics.
