Ross went to Clinton High School and was the sports editor for the school newspaper. She was a baseball batgirl, a wrestling mat maid, and a football and basketball pompon squad member for the Oklahoma Sooners.
During her final year at Oklahoma, she interned at KOKH-TV. She began her career in broadcast journalism at KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. Ross was named Maid of Cotton in 1981. She was America’s global ambassador to the cotton industry, pushing cotton consumption while travelling abroad. Ross worked for KOCO-TV for 18 months, WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio for four years, ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut for two years, and Sports News Network in Washington, D.C. for nine months.
She returned to KLAS-TV after a 9-month sabbatical, becoming Las Vegas’ first female weekday sports anchor, where she lasted less than a year. She visited WTVJ in Miami. When the expansion Florida Marlins signed Benito Santiago on December 16, 1992, she met Dombrowski. In April of 1993, Santiago hit the first home run for the Marlins, and a month later, Dombrowski asked her out. Following in the footsteps of Gayle Gardner, Ross was recognized as one of the first female sportscasters with a great grasp of sports. Ross was one of the first women in her business to speak up against employment conditions for women. Her role at GameDay was entirely vocal.
