Schoen began his career as a Connecticut newspaper reporter and editor before joining Dow Jones as a radio newsreader and writer for The Wall Street Journal. He covered the Crash of ’87 and Wall Street’s insider trading scandals as a correspondent for the CBS Radio Network’s half-hour program, Business Update. Schoen became the first New York editor when the program was renamed Marketplace and production was relocated to Los Angeles. He covered Wall Street and a variety of other business subjects. He joined CNBC before it appeared on the air in 1989 and managed the network’s news operations in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo in the early 1990s. Schoen began working as a senior producer for msnbc.com in 1996.
As a fellow with the RIAS RTDNF German-American Journalist Exchange Programme in the summer of 2012, he reported on Europe’s economic and financial crises. Still Made in America, a series of reports examining the ongoing restructuring of the American manufacturing industry, earned him a Best in Business Journalism award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in 2011. Schoen was selected as a fellow for the East-West Center’s first China-US Journalist Exchange in 2010. He published China 2.0, a series of publications that described the increasing strains on China’s rapidly growing economy.
