Whitehall is descended from Welsh lawyer Thomas Jones Phillips (not to be confused with Mayor Thomas Phillips), a leading opponent of the 1839 Newport Rising. Nigel Havers and Richard Griffiths, both actors, were his godfathers. Barnaby’s grandparents are Jack Baxter Whitehall and Nora Louisa M. Kelland on his father’s side. William Leonard Thompson Isbister and Dorothy Dix are his maternal grandparents. He went to Marlborough College.
