Autry was a standout quarterback for the Riverdale Cowboys in high school. He was a second-string tight end for the Tigers in his final year after receiving an athletic scholarship to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. In 1975, he was picked by the Green Bay Packers, where he spent three games as the starting quarterback in 1976. His football career ended abruptly when he was released by then-coach Bart Starr. Autry then moved to Hollywood to pursue a career as an actor. He attempted a football comeback in 1979, playing for the B.C. Lions of the CFL (as Carlos Brown). Behind Joe Paopao and another ex-Green Bay Packer, Jerry Tagge, he was the third-string quarterback.
Autry made his film debut in 1978 with the film Remember My Name. He first met his father, Carl Autry Sr., in 1981, while on location in Shreveport for the film Southern Comfort, after seeing Carl’s name in the phone book. Following that, he decided to revert to his birth surname of Autry. According to a 2007 interview with Pat Robertson’s The 700 Club, throughout his acting years. As a Republican candidate, he was elected mayor of Fresno, California, in 2000. On January 5, 2001, he became the 23rd Mayor of Fresno. Autry was re-elected mayor of Fresno in 2004 and served until January 6, 2009.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him to the California State Film Commission in 2006. Autry had a radio talk show on KYNO AM 940 in Fresno from 2008 through 2011. Autry and co-star Randall Franks formed Autry-Franks Productions, which published the charity music CD Christmas Time’s A Comin’, which featured members of the cast of In the Heat of the Night. The project largely benefited drug abuse prevention NGOs. Autry also paid tribute to his distant relative, actor Gene Autry, with a musical composition. Autry used gospel, country, and other musical genres in the 2013 effort Alan Autry and Randall Franks Mississippi Moon: Country Traditions.
