Seigenthaler Career
Seigenthaler began his career in television news as a writer and producer at WNGE-TV (now WKRN-TV) in Nashville, Tennessee in 1980. From 1981 through 1990, he worked as a reporter and producer for WSMV-TV in Nashville, as well as hosting a weekday public affairs show. He then went on to anchor the weekend evening news at KOMO-TV in Seattle. He married KOMO weeknight anchor Kerry Brock in January 1992, and she later joined him at the Weekend Anchor Desk at KOMO. He then returned to Nashville to co-anchor the evening news for WKRN-TV. In September 1999, he took over as the primary temporary co-host of Weekend Today alongside Soledad O’Brien. Following the death of David Bloom in 2003, he returned. He was one of the rotating Sunday anchors in 1996 and became the main Sunday anchor in 1998.
During his 11-year employment with NBC News, Seigenthaler was the anchor for the weekend edition of NBC Nightly News for more than seven years. During his April 1, 2007 show, Seigenthaler stated that it was his final broadcast as the weekend anchor of NBC Nightly News. He also presented the MSNBC series Lockup and MSNBC Investigates. According to NBC News President Steve Capus, Seigenthaler’s contract was not renewed because the network could no longer afford to hire a staff member whose major responsibility was anchoring the weekend nightly news programs. In October 2006, the network announced employment layoffs. After NBC, he worked for the Associated Press until joining Seigenthaler Public Relations in July 2008. In 2013 he began work for Al Jazeera America as the anchorman for its one-hour prime-time news broadcasts at 8 pm Eastern and 11pm Eastern time.
