Perkins grew up in Colrain, Massachusetts, after her parents split in 1963. She began her career in theatre with Arena Civic Theatre, a non-profit community theater in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Perkins attended Northfield Mount Hermon School, an exclusive preparatory school, before moving to Chicago in 1978 to earn a Certificate in Acting from DePaul University’s Goodman School of Drama.
