Freedman began his television reporting career in the late 1970s at WLKY-TV in Louisville, Kentucky, before going on to WAVE-TV. After working at KDFW-TV in Dallas, Texas, Freedman relocated to San Francisco in 1981 to work for KRON-TV. He also spent a year and a half working for CBS News’ morning show. He began working at KGO-TV in 1991. He also covered Russia in 1992 and Hurricane Katrina during his career. In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he traveled across the United States by train, chatting with people along the way to Ground Zero. He returned to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the attack in 2006.
