Bernstein was the sports director of the student radio station KALX (FM) and broadcast football, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball while at Cal. Bernstein was appointed as the voice of Cal basketball at the age of 23 after working as the backup broadcaster and pregame and postgame host the previous season. Bernstein is a collegiate basketball, NHL, and football play-by-play announcer for ESPN, the Pac-12 Network, and the Oakland A’s, as well as the former IMG Sports/Cal Basketball Radio Network commentator for the California Golden Bears men’s basketball team. Bernstein had been at Cal since 1997, and he also conducted national college football play-by-play on the Touchdown Radio Network alongside 1992 Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer Gary Patterson.

Since 2014, he has worked as a part-time broadcaster for the Oakland Athletics and as a talk show presenter for KGMZ 95.7 FM. The Game in San Francisco, formerly presented by J.J. Stokes and Geoff Sheen from noon to 3 p.m. on Xtra Sports 860/Sports Byline (KTRB) in San Francisco; and presenter of The Randy Bennett Radio Show, a weekly program starring St. Mary’s College of California men’s basketball coach Randy Bennett. Bernstein was one of two contenders for the job of San Diego Padres television play-by-play announcer in the winter of 2008-2009, however, he did not earn the job. Bernstein emceed the opening ceremonies for the San Francisco Maccabi Games in August 2009; Bernstein participated in the games as a kid 21 years previously.

Bernstein worked as a commentator for the Florida Marlins for three years, collaborating with 2011 Ford C. Frick Award winner Dave Van Horne, before returning to the Bay Area full-time. Bernstein also worked as a broadcaster for the San Francisco Giants and the Montreal Expos in Major League Baseball. He also worked for the Sonoma County Crushers, Solano Steelheads, High Desert Mavericks, and Tacoma Rainiers, among other minor league baseball teams. Bernstein’s flexibility has been demonstrated through his work as a play-by-play announcer for the San Jose Sharks, California Golden Bears football, San Francisco Demons, Oakland Athletics, ESPN Radio, NHL Radio, Westwood One, and the NFL on Sports USA Radio Network, as well as countless events on Fox Sports Net.
