He began as a reporter and anchor at WBUR-Boston and KQED-San Francisco, he hosted the award-winning statewide broadcast “The California Report.” He was also a regular contributor to NPR on a national level. Wright joined ABC News as a correspondent in the network’s Los Angeles bureau in November 2000. He has since been sent to posts in London, Washington, and New York. Prior to joining ABC, he worked as a reporter and substitute anchor for KRON, the Bay Area’s NBC affiliate. Wright was “Nightline”‘s lead political reporter during the 2016 presidential campaign, and although living in New York, he has gone practically weekly to assist ABC’s White House staff in covering the Trump administration.
He has worked with ABC News before. He has reported from six continents, interviewed six US presidents, and covered two papal transfers during his more than 15 years with the network. He has seen wars, revolutions, natural disasters, terrorist assaults, nuclear meltdowns, and humanitarian crises firsthand. He’s also chronicled Hollywood celebrities and interviewed trailblazing tech titans like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.Wright has vast experience reporting from crisis zones as a foreign reporter. He reported from Gaza during the height of Israel’s bombardment in 2014. He arrived in Beirut hours before the IDF destroyed the airport and remained throughout the fighting. From before the US invasion until the surge, he visited Iraq more than a dozen times.
He’s had some incredible life experiences along the way, including hiking the Hindu Kush after an earthquake in the dead of winter, tracking polar bears on the shores of Hudson Bay, meeting mountain gorillas in Congo, and searching remote stretches of the Indian Ocean for a missing Malaysian airliner. He traveled around Africa and South America with Pope Francis and Europe and the Middle East with Pope Benedict. He traveled with Barack Obama for the better part of a year as he covered his historic presidential campaign. During the 2008 presidential election, he covered Republican outlier John McCain.
His employment has given him a front-row seat to history on occasion. He reported from Kabul the morning the Taliban fell, and from New York City the night Donald Trump was elected. He was in St. Paul the night Obama became the first African-American to receive his party’s presidential nomination. Wright broke the news live from the Vatican the night Pope John Paul II died. As white smoke announced Pope Benedict XVI’s election, he was back in St. Peter’s Square. ABC’s papal coverage received the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award in 2006. On that assignment, Wright also met his wife, Victoria.
