Lin began her career as a weekend news anchor for KTTV in Los Angeles, where she was a member of the Special Undercover Investigations Unit. She began her reporting career at the CONUS Communications bureau in Washington, D.C., where she covered the Reagan presidency. Lin has worked as an ABC News reporter and for NPR. She worked as a communications director and senior advisor for the Los Angeles County Chief Executive Office.Lin worked for ABC News in the 1990s, when she was a national correspondent and substitute host for Good Morning America. She also appeared on World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Lin’s major stories at ABC News included national coverage of the Montana Freeman standoff, the capture of the Unabomber, and the apprehension of the Unabomber.
Lin worked as a CNN news anchor and correspondent from 1998 to 2006, and was headquartered at the network’s global headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Lin hosted many news programs at CNN, including CNN Early Edition, CNN Live at Daybreak, weekend editions of CNN Newsroom, and the old newsmagazine show CNN NewsStand. During this time, she covered several major news stories, including President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial, the 1999 Columbine High School shootings, the Taliban’s fall in Afghanistan in 2001, and the 2002 rescue of nine miners trapped for 77 hours in Somerset, Pennsylvania. Lin reported live from Times Square in New York City as part of CNN’s worldwide Millennium night coverage.
She was a key figure in CNN’s election coverage in 2000, Lin also spoke with a number of major individuals in the Florida vote recount, including Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Lin toured the world for CNN, covering breaking news issues such as the rebuilding of Kosovo. Lin was a visiting speaker at the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism in 2007. Lin began working as a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Probation Department in 2012. She joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2015 to manage their strategic communications team. She became senior advisor to the chief executive officer of Los Angeles County in 2018 owing to a change in administration.
