Millar began her media career as a cadet for The Gympie Times and later for Brisbane’s afternoon tabloid daily, The Sun, which collapsed in late 1991. Lisa then traveled north to Townsville, where she worked for WIN TV, a regional television station, for a year before joining the ABC as its North Queensland correspondent, covering a huge territory ranging from Torres Strait to the outback mining town of Mount Isa.
Millar returned to Queensland and became ABC’s state political reporter, documenting the growth of Pauline Hanson and her One Nation party. She was voted head of the Brisbane press gallery’s 30-person press gallery and co-anchor of ABC’s state election coverage in 1998 and 2001. Lisa also reported for ABC Radio in Queensland and was a regular Queensland contributor on 702 ABC Sydney. Millar became the ABC’s North American reporter in 2001, residing in Washington, before returning to Australia in 2005. She was a member of the team that received the Walkley Award for Investigative Journalism in 2005 for the story that led to the discovery of Vivian Solon in the Philippines. The Dart Center for Journalism granted Lisa an Ochberg Fellowship in 2007.
