Is Carol Marin leaving Channel 5? – Career
Marin began her journalism career in 1972 as a reporter, anchor, and assistant news director at WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee. She moved to WSM-TV in Nashville in 1976, where she was a key player in the investigative reporting that led to the ouster and indictment of then-Tennessee Governor Ray Blanton. Marin was hired by NBC-owned and operated station WMAQ-TV in Chicago in 1978, where she worked for nearly two decades.
On May 1, 1997, she resigned as 6 and 10 p.m. news anchor in protest of the station’s decision to give Jerry Springer a commentary segment on the evening news program she anchored; a few weeks later, her co-anchor Ron Magers resigned for the same reason. The station’s ratings plummeted after the two anchors left, and Springer resigned.
Marin and producer Don Moseley were hired by CBS News two months later. She worked as a network correspondent and an investigative reporter for WBBM-TV, the CBS station in Chicago, on a dual assignment. Marin worked for CBS News’ 60 Minutes, 60 Minutes II, and Evening News with Dan Rather from 1997 to 2002. Marin and Moseley left CBS in 2002 to start their own documentary company, Marin Corp Productions. They’ve worked on projects for CNN, The New York Times, and The Discovery Channel. Marin Corp Productions is based at DePaul University, where they teach journalistic ethics to DePaul students through the Center for Journalism Integrity and Excellence.
Marin returned to WMAQ in 2004, where she now serves as the station’s political editor. Marin has also been a political columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times since 2004. She also became a contributor to Chicago Tonight on WTTW, a Chicago public radio station, in 2006. She frequently moderates political panels. Marin announced in September 2020 that she would be leaving WMAQ and WTTW after the November general election. Marin’s last appearance on WTTW was on November 5, 2020, and her last sign-off on WMAQ was on November 6, 2020. On her final episode, WMAQ reflected on her years of broadcasting.
