Steinfort is a multi-award-winning journalist who joined 60 Minutes as a full-time Correspondent after several years of filing reports for the show. Over the last 14 years, the 33-year-old has covered the biggest topics in Australia and around the world, reporting for shows like News, TODAY, A Current Affair, Inside Story, and 60 Minutes. He graduated from RMIT University with a Journalism degree while working as a Reporter at WIN News in Ballarat. In 2007, Tom moved to Melbourne to work for Nine News. He earned the Melbourne Press Club’s Young Journalist of the Year Award and was nominated for a Walkley Award for his coverage of several big issues, including the devastating Black Saturday bushfires.
Tom relocated to Sydney to work on A Current Affair. On the set of Hey Dad, he was a member of Robert Hughes’ Logie-nominated inquiry into sexual assault. His reporting on the ground after the 2011 Japanese tsunami crisis earned him a nomination for the Walkley Foundation’s Young Journalist of the Year Award. The same year, he was caught up in the devastation of the Queensland floods and the Christchurch earthquake. Tom returned to Nine News. As the NSW bushfire crisis evolved late in 2013, he was reporting from the field as part of Channel Nine’s Logie Award-winning coverage of the disaster. He spent months in Pretoria in 2014 covering the spectacular murder trial of Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius.
Tom joined Channel Nine as Europe Correspondent in January 2015. He has covered big events like as earthquakes in Italy, the Brexit shock, and the first finding of components of the missing jet MH370 on the isolated island of Reunion. Tom has also worked in the network’s US Bureau, where he covered important stories such as Michael Jackson’s shocking death, as well as being on the campaign trail with Donald Trump as he surged to a historic election victory in 2016. Tom returned to Sydney in 2017 to co-host Weekend TODAY while continuing to serve as a foreign journalist on the side.
He has also submitted a number of reports for 60 Minutes over the previous few years, including getting rare access to reports from within North Korea during the height of the deadly nuclear missile standoff between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump. He also contributed to the show’s coverage of Australian drug mule “cocaine” Cassie Sainsbury. In 2018, he began working full-time on the program. He’s also run the New York and Melbourne marathons and attended 12 AFL grand finals, the most recent of which was the sweetest of all when his beloved Richmond finally ended its 37-year premiership drought.
