After graduating, she worked as an assistant to the chief of staff at Channel Seven in Sydney. Brown moved to WIN Television in Wollongong in 1991 to begin a journalism cadetship. She joined the Nine Network in 1992 and began compiling segments such as “Australian Agenda” stories for the Nine Network’s late news show Nightline. She left Nightline in 1993 to work on A Current Affair. Her most memorable A Current Affair stories include a series of reports on a group of Australian soldiers returning to Vietnam on the 20th anniversary of the fall of Saigon; uncovering a tire dumping ring that posed a major environmental threat; and a feature story on refugees in Bei Hai, southern China.

She was hired as a reporter for the Nine Network’s 60 Minutes program. Mel Gibson was the first person Brown interviewed on 60 Minutes. Brown formerly worked as a fill-in host for Nine Sunday AM News. In April 2016, Brown and eight others (including three additional Nine Network employees, David Ballment, Stephen Rice, and Ben Williamson) were detained in Lebanon on suspicion of child kidnapping. According to Lebanese legal sources, the group will be prosecuted with “armed abduction, purveying threats, and physical harm” – offenses punishable by up to twenty years in jail with hard labor. She was released only after the Nine Network paid a large monetary compensation to the father of the children who were the focus of the attempted kidnapping.
