She began her career in journalism as a cadet for the local Manning River Times newspaper, rising to the position of assistant editor before moving to Sydney. Hayes is most recognized for her work as a 60 Minutes reporter and as a former Today co-host. She worked for New Idea and TV Week magazines for a few weeks after moving to Sydney before becoming a correspondent for Network Ten’s Eyewitness News. She joined the Nine Network in 1981, first reporting for National Nine News and subsequently hosting the National Nine Morning News. Hayes was appointed co-host of the Australian television show Today with Steve Liebmann in 1986, a position she held until 1996 when Tracy Grimshaw took over. She began working as a correspondent for 60 Minutes in 1996. In 2021, Hayes celebrated 40 years with the Nine Network.
Liz produced and presented the remarkable documentary ‘The Great Gift’ in 1986, which told the stories of heart transplant patients and the work of brilliant cardiac surgeon Dr Victor Chang. She won a Logie for that documentary and was soon hired as co-host of the national breakfast show Today. Liz got up about 4 a.m. for 10 years to prepare for one of the industry’s most difficult jobs: two hours of live television covering topics ranging from sport to politics, showbiz to economics. Her four to five interviews every day on all of these themes made her one of television’s most skilled interviewers. She has also hosted special event telecasts for Channel Nine over the years, including the Winter Olympics and the announcement of Sydney’s Olympic bid.
