He began his professional acting career with a modest role in Robert Redford’s 1994 film Quiz Show and a guest-starring role on Law & Order, his first of seven appearances on the show. He also got his start in theater, playing Louis Ironson in Tony Kushner’s Angels in America at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater. Shenkman played Roy Cohn in a workshop version of the play while still a student at New York University. He would repeat the character of Louis in the HBO miniseries adaptation seven years after portraying the role at ACT. Shenkman blended work in off-Broadway productions in New York with small appearances in films such as Eraser (1996), The Siege (1998), (1998), and Jesus’ Son (1998).

Shenkman alternated between studio films like Must Love Dogs (2005) and Just Like Heaven (2005) and independent films like Then She Found Me (2008) and Breakfast with Scot (2008), a gay-themed Canadian film for which the NHL notably endorsed the use of a team’s emblem and uniforms. In 2010, he co-starred in Solitary Man with Michael Douglas and the Sundance premiere Blue Valentine. He also had recurring parts on Grey’s Anatomy, Burn Notice, Damages, Drop Dead Diva, and FX’s Lights Out, as well as a series regular in Julianna Margulies’ legal thriller Canterbury’s Law on Fox in 2008.
