Uhlmann ran unsuccessfully for the Molonglo constituency with the Osborne Independent Group in the ACT general election in 1998. The conservative group was named after Paul Osborne, who was a staunch opponent of abortion care and advocated for the decriminalization of abortion. When Osborne proposed significantly restricting abortion in the ACT, he and Uhlmann clashed. Uhlmann had written in support of establishing an abortion facility in the territory six years before.

Uhlmann transitioned to television in 2008, serving as political editor for The 7.30 Report, ABC News, and ABC News channel.
