McAuliffe began acting when she was eight years old, appearing in the Australian television shows Comedy Inc. and Blue Water High. He later appeared in an episode of Packed to the Rafters. He also appeared in the Australian indie coming-of-age short film “Franswa Sharl” in 2009, as well as Resistance (2009). McAuliffe made his feature film debut in Rob Reiner’s Flipped. He auditioned for the role of Bryce, the lead, while on vacation in the United States. The film is based on Wendelin Van Draanen’s 2001 novel of the same name. McAuliffe was cast as the lead in the science fiction film I Am Number Four in May 2010.
He then played young Quick Lamb in the Australian miniseries Cloudstreet, based on Tim Winton’s novel of the same name. McAuliffe played a young Jay Gatsby in Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 cinematic adaption of The Great Gatsby. McAuliffe went on to appear in Beneath the Harvest Sky (2013). Before the project was canceled, McAuliffe was cast as the archangel Uriel with Djimon Hounsou in Alex Proyas’ action picture Paradise Lost. In 2012, he appeared as one of the young Assange’s companions participating in the International Subversives in the Australian television film Underground: The Julian Assange Story. McAuliffe was cast in the live-action film version of the 1998 Japanese anime Kite starring Samuel L. Jackson and India Eisley in 2013.
McAuliffe was cast as real-life gang member Daniel Ryan in The Legend of Ben Hall, an Australian historical epic based on the true story of bushranger Ben Hall, in 2015. McAuliffe’s first novel, The Hill Ghost, was published in 2018. McAuliffe was named a UNICEF Australia National Ambassador in November 2013. “It is an honor to be invited to be a National Ambassador to UNICEF Australia, and it is so important that it is at a time when I can really contribute,” he stated after his appointment. McAuliffe is the Youth Ambassador for Wolf Connection, a non-profit based in California that saves wolves and wolf-dogs and also has a youth education and empowerment program.
