Scorsone’s first TV appearances were in the Goosebumps adaptation of Night of the Living Dummy 2, and she later appeared as a child on the Canadian children’s television show Mr. Dressup. In 1998, she played Amber, an estranged fifteen-year-old daughter who comes from Vancouver to stay with her mother for a school term in Toronto, in an episode of CBC Radio’s The Mystery Project called Peggy Delaney. Scorsone’s breakthrough came when she landed the lead role in the Lifetime crime drama series Missing from 2003 to 2006. She portrayed Jess Mastriani, a young woman who has visions of missing people. Jess joined the FBI after rescuing some missing people.

She starred as Alice Hamilton in the Showcase TV miniseries Alice, which was later broadcast on Syfy in the United States. Scorsone joined the cast of Shonda Rhimes’ drama series Private Practice in 2010 as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, Derek Shepherd’s sister from Grey’s Anatomy. Eric Stoltz, who was directing one of the show’s episodes at the time, heard about the role of Amelia and remembered Scorsone from her work on My Horrible Year! He mentioned her to Shonda Rhimes and remarked on Scorsone’s resemblance to Patrick Dempsey (the actor who plays Derek Shepherd). Scorsone was promoted to series regular for Private Practice in July 2010.
