Joan Smalls is a model and television personality from Puerto Rico who was the first Latina model to endorse Estée Lauder cosmetics in 2011. Joan grew up in Hatillo, Puerto Rico, alongside her two sisters. Eric Smalls, her father, is a Saint Thomas-born West Indian of African and Irish ancestry. Betzaida Rodrguez, Smalls’ mother, is a social worker of Puerto Rican, Spanish, and Tano ancestry. Rodrguez is also of Irish and Indian descent. In 2007, Elite Model Management signed her, and she worked as a commercial model for brands like Nordstrom, Liz Claiborne, and Sass & Bide. She left Elite in 2009 and joined IMG Models Worldwide, where she focused on runway work. Her modeling career took off after she was selected as a Givenchy exclusive for Riccardo Tisci’s Spring/Summer Haute Couture show in January 2010.
