Robins maintains that after his father died, he reacted by eating more and giving up athletics, which he attributes to the start of his fight with obesity. His obesity was a common source of comedic relief in his performances, but it also had major health consequences. He was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea in 2003, which led him to stop breathing roughly 70 times per hour while sleeping, owing in large part to his weight.

He also had excessive cholesterol, borderline type 2 diabetes, impaired liver function, and limited mobility. To combat his weight, he underwent lapband bariatric surgery in 2006. Robins weighed close to 150 kg at the time; in an episode of Australian Story that aired on 3 July 2007, he revealed that he has shed approximately 65 kg to date.

Robins worked as a breakfast radio host for Triple J in Australia for seven years, until 1999. Helen Razer (1994 or earlier), Paul McDermott (1997), Jen Oldershaw, and The Sandman (Steve Abbott) (1998) were among his co-presenters. In 2001, he co-hosted the breakfast show on Sydney radio station Triple M with Amanda Keller, and then on Vega 95.3 with Tony Squires and Rebecca Wilson.

Robins’ career in television comedy was spurred by his Triple J fame; he starred on Live and Sweaty and was a regular on McFeast before partnering McDermott on Good News Week in 1996. He remained with Good News Week from 1996 to 2000, and when Network Ten relaunched the show in 2008, he returned in his former capacity.
