Eddie McGuire Collingwood Football Club – AFL

McGuire was elected president of the Collingwood Football Club, an Australian rules football club in the Australian Football League (AFL), by member voting on October 29, 1998. Collingwood played in back-to-back grand finals (2002-03) within three years after McGuire’s appointment as club president. Collingwood defeated St Kilda in the AFL grand final rematch in 2010. The first match ended in a tie, prompting McGuire to declare prior to the rematch that “he had seen more drawn Collingwood Grand Finals (1977 and 2010) than he had seen premierships.”

In other on-field matters, McGuire oversaw the replacements of three senior coaches at Collingwood during his stint as president. The first was the hiring of Mick Malthouse as senior coach at the end of the 1999 season to replace Tony Shaw, who resigned after the team received the wooden spoon that year. McGuire produced a coaching succession plan in July 2009, in which he oversaw a deal that saw recently retired player Nathan Buckley join the club as an assistant coach under Malthouse for the 2010 and 2011 seasons before Malthouse handed over the senior coach position to Buckley at the end of the 2011 season.

During McGuire’s time as president, he oversaw the redevelopment and construction of Collingwood’s new training and administrative facilities off-field. These facilities were moved from Victoria Park to the Olympic Park complex, with the indoor training and administrative facilities located at the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Centre and the outdoor training ground moving first to the Olympic Park stadium in 2004. In 2013, the club relocated its outdoor training facility to the newly constructed Olympic Park Oval, replacing the outdoor space of the previous Olympic Park stadium, which had been demolished in 2012.

After leading the Magpies for 23 years, McGuire announced in December 2020 that he would step down as president at the end of the 2021 season. However, McGuire resigned earlier than anticipated in February 2021 due to ongoing pressure brought on by allegations of a racist culture at the Collingwood Football Club following the publication of the Do Better report.

Eddie McGuire Racism

A 13-year-old Collingwood supporter racially abused Sydney Swans player Adam Goodes by referring to him as a “ape” on May 24, 2013. McGuire himself made an on-air allusion to Adam Goodes and King Kong on May 29, 2013, which was heavily panned. McGuire was labeled a “continual boofhead” in June 2015 for comments he made about an Indigenous dance performed by Goodes. During the Big Freeze at the ‘G event in June 2016, McGuire, Sam Newman, North Melbourne president James Brayshaw, and former St Kilda player Danny Frawley made comments about drowning Fairfax writer Caroline Wilson.

On March 29, 2019, McGuire sparked further outrage when he mocked double amputee Cynthia Banham at a pre-game coin toss before to a match between the Sydney Swans and Adelaide Crows. McGuire apologized and declined to call the Essendon vs. St Kilda game for Fox Footy the next day.
