Tremor, rigidity, slowness of movement, and trouble walking are early signs. Depression, anxiety, and apathy can all cause cognitive and behavioral issues. Dementia becomes common in the latter stages of the disease. The disease’s motor symptoms are caused by the loss of nerve cells in the substantia nigra, an area of the midbrain, resulting in a dopamine shortage.

The mechanism of this cell death is unknown, although it involves the accumulation of misfolded proteins in neurons that form Lewy bodies. Parkinsonism or a parkinsonian syndrome refers to the major motor symptoms.
