Luiza Trajano Magazine Luiza

Under her leadership, Magazine Luiza grew into a chain of over 1,000 outlets spread throughout 18 Brazilian states, with over 18 million customers and 27,000 staff, as well as a publicly traded firm.  In 2017, Trajano was startled by her husband’s femicide of Magazine Luiza store manager Denise Neves dos Anjos, who was 37 at the time and had 13 years of service. This prompted Trajano to not only become vocal against domestic abuse, but also to take action within her firm, which employs 50% women.

Trajano is said to have established a domestic abuse hotline for employees (including male employees), with the company giving counseling and legal assistance, mapping relocation options, and informing authorities. Furthermore, Magazine Luiza’s outsourced workforce suppliers were mandated to hire at least 2% of battered women in order for them to gain financial independence, which can be a key step toward escaping an abusive marriage. Trajano supports quotas for women on corporate boards, arguing that if no quotas are implemented, it will take 100 years for boards to include 20% or 30% of women. She cites her aunt (the creator of Magazine Luiza) and her late mother as influences.

Magazine Luiza declared in September 2020 that its 2021 training program would be limited to black candidates only. Trajano described it as a “significant step toward consolidating our corporate diversity.” The program will also waive the requirement for English proficiency and previous work experience. The announcement generated outrage and was met with pushback from conservatives. For example, Jair Bolsonaro’s government deputy leader in the Chamber of Deputies stated that he will personally file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office over ‘racist.’ Trajano stated, “Our colorblind programs never worked…we know people will sue, but we’ll keep going.” We will fight, and we will not give up easy.’

Trajano noted in 2019 that racial disparity “is still a very serious problem.” We have only one Black female chairwoman of a large Brazilian corporation…and our current effort is to have Black female directors, chairpersons…but also males, in order for them to have more powerful positions within corporations.’
