Hawkins received a full tuition scholastic scholarship to Illinois State University, where he majored in theatre arts. In his first college play, he played Toledo in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. While still in college, he landed his first major motion picture role in the biopic The Express: The Ernie Davis Story, playing Davis’ teammate Art Baker. He took a year and a half off from school and returned in 2007. He is a member of the fraternity Omega Psi Phi. He received his diploma in 2012. Hawkins previously appeared in several television shows, including HBO’s Ballers, TBS’ Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, MTV’s Underemployed, and ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7.
