John Elkann Biography

John Elkann is the current Chairman of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and an Italian-American industrialist. His grandfather Gianni Agnelli, Fiat’s majority shareholder, chose him as his successor.

Elkann attended primary school in the United Kingdom and then in Brazil before moving to Paris, France, with his family. While pursuing his bachelor’s degree, John Elkann participated in several internships to gain valuable work experience. These include a car dealership in Lille, France, a headlight plant in Birmingham, England, a production line in Tychy, Poland, and a thesis on e-auctions at GE’s CIG (corporate initiatives group). Elkann’s grandfather, Gianni Agnelli, chose him to take over the family business from Giovanni Alberto Agnelli, the son of Gianni’s younger brother, Umberto, who died at the age of 33. As a result of the family tragedy, he entered the automotive industry and joined the Fiat Board at the age of 21. He joined General Electric’s Corporate Audit program after graduating from Politecnico di Torino.

In 2003, he joined IFIL (now EXOR) and worked tirelessly to turn around the FIAT Group. In May 2004, he was instrumental in the appointment of the current FCA CEO, Sergio Marchionne. Following the death of his grandfather Gianni Agnelli in 2003, John Elkann became the vice chairman of Fiat, and the following year, he became the vice chairman of Giovanni Agnelli Sapaz following the death of his great uncle Umberto Agnelli. He was appointed Chairman of Fiat S.p.A. and Giovanni Agnelli Sapaz in 2010. In February 2011, he was appointed CEO and Chairman of EXOR. He is also the Chairman of Ferrari and a member of the boards of ‘The Economist Group’ and ‘Partner Re’.
