Stynes made comments about a photo of Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith, a Victoria Cross and Medal for Gallantry recipient, getting out of a swimming pool on the 28 February 2012 edition of The Circle, with George Negus. Following tabloid criticism, they approached Roberts-Smith directly, who accepted their apologies and confirmed there was no malicious intent. Negus stated that his words were taken out of context and that he was not referring to Roberts-Smith directly.
Fairfax newspapers apologized to Stynes and Negus on September 13, 2014, saying, “Our interpretation was wrong, and we accept that both Mr Negus and Ms Stynes were not referring to Cpl Roberts-Smith personally.” The false charges were also withdrawn by News Limited outlets The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, and news.com.au.
