Tilley was raised in Mudgee, New South Wales, with his parents and three brothers. He went to Mudgee High School and became the school captain. Tilley’s father was the Pastor of Revival Centres International’s Mudgee congregation, a fundamentalist Pentecostal church founded in Melbourne in the 1950s. Tilley effectively abandoned the religion when he traveled to Sydney to study at the age of 21. He moved to Newport, Sydney, after high school to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce at Macquarie University. He is now a resident of Tamarama.

Tilley revealed in November 2019 that she will be leaving Hack at the end of the year. He’d start a new job as a contributor and part-time host on Network 10’s The Project, where he’d previously appeared as a guest presenter throughout 2019. Prior to departing the ABC, Tilley served as the host of the ABC radio program PM and as a reporter on an episode of the current affairs program Foreign Correspondent.

Tilley was interested in journalism from a young age and worked at a radio station and a newspaper throughout high school, but was discouraged by relatives from continuing it as a career owing to the difficulty in getting work in the sector.
After graduating from Macquarie University, he worked as an investment banker at Deutsche Bank for two years before deciding to change careers. After traveling abroad and training himself video editing skills, Tilley concluded that journalism was what he wanted to pursue in the long run. Tilley began working for the ABC as a casual employee in late 2005, doing secretarial duties in the newsroom. Later, he transitioned into radio presenting, initially as a late-night ‘graveyard shift’ host, and later as a talk-back host.
Tilley was hired as a reporter for the daily Triple J news and current affairs radio show Hack in 2007, first fielding phone calls from fans and operating as an off-location reporter from the Northern Territory. He took over as host of the show in 2011, a position he kept till 2019. Tilley hosted the first in a series of live studio-based debate and discussion forums broadcast on ABC2 in 2014. Tilley had hosted nine of these specials as of July 2017, including five under the Hack Live banner.
