He joined the ‘Commodores’ in 1968 as a singer and saxophonist. The following year, he signed a record contract with Atlantic Records for one record before moving on to Motown Records. The band ‘Commodores’ released their debut studio album, ‘Machine Gun,’ in 1974, which was a funk album. Three years later, they released their self-titled album, ‘Commodores,’ which became extremely popular and is still regarded as one of their top five albums to this day. In 1981, he performed the theme song for the film ‘Endless Love’ with Diana Ross. The song went on to become a worldwide smash hit in the United Kingdom, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. It is also regarded as one of Motown Records’ most successful singles.

His solo career began in 1982 with a self-titled album. One of the album’s singles, ‘Truly,’ debuted at number one on the US music charts. In 1983, he released his next solo effort, ‘Can’t Slow Down,’ on the Motown Records label. The album sold twice as many copies as his first and went on to win two Grammy Awards. Lionel Richie was seen performing ‘All Night Long,’ one of his greatest singles, at the closing ceremony of the Olympics Games in Los Angeles the following year. ‘Stuck on You,’ ‘Running with the Night,’ ‘Penny Lover,’ and ‘Hello’ were among his hit singles from 1982 to 1984.

He collaborated with superstar Michael Jackson on the charity single hit “We Are the World” in 1985. The next year, he released one of his most successful albums yet, ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’, which produced a range of hits including ‘Ballerina Girl’, ‘Se La’ and ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’. He took a few years off before returning with his greatest-hits collection, ‘Back to Front,’ in 1992. Four years later, he released his fourth studio album, ‘Louder Than Words,’ which received mixed reviews. Time, his fifth studio album, released in 1998, also failed to chart and sold poorly in comparison to his previous efforts. Richie’s song ‘Running with the Night’ was featured on the video game from 2002 to 2005.

He appeared on ‘Australian Idol’ from 2007 to 2009, performed at Times Square for the New Year’s Eve celebration, and released the album ‘Just Go’. He was seen performing at Michael Jackson’s memorial service in 2009. He performed at the National Memorial Day Concert in Washington DC in 2010, as well as the AFL Grand Final Replay. Two years later, he released ‘Tuskegee,’ his tenth studio album, which included hit singles by other recording artists.
On NBC’s ‘The Today Show’ in 2013, he announced the launch of his ‘All the Nights All Night Long’ tour.
