Barry competed on Survivor: Panama — Exile Island, the 12th season of the reality competition series Survivor, in 2006. He began in the older male tribe and quickly bonded with Terry Deitz due to their shared flying experiences. When the four tribes were reduced to two, Barry and Deitz formed an all-male alliance with the younger tribe’s Austin Carty and Nick Stanbury. Barry also formed a bond with Ruth-Marie Milliman, who was taken aback when she was voted out in Episode Four.
In Episode Six, he reconciled with his alliance members and finally revealed to Stanbury his background as an astronaut. Barry’s fate was sealed when the Casaya tribe won the combined Reward/Immunity Challenge in that episode and sent Sally Schumann to Exile Island (making her immune from the Tribal Council vote). Because Carty and Stanbury were allies, Barry was defeated 3-1 when Deitz voted against him.
