Ellis was a contestant on the reality television show Survivor: Marquesas, which aired in 2002. Ellis, a member of the Maraamu tribe, was the third contestant eliminated from the show. Ellis received an Emmy nomination in 2003 for hosting Countdown to Survivor: The Amazon for KCBS-TV, and a Los Angeles Emmy Award in 2006 for hosting Hola! Survivor: Guatemala for KCBS. Hunter Career
Ellis went on to host a number of nationally televised programs. Tactical to Practical (also known as Tactical to Practical With Hunter) was the first of these, airing on The History Channel as a program that took a historical look at the development of common consumer electronic products that began as military research projects. It aired 38 episodes in 2003-04 and lasted three seasons.
In 2004, he began co-hosting 9 on the Town, a half-hour program that airs five days a week on KCAL-TV (channel 9), a Los Angeles-based independent station. He began hosting another History Channel show, Man, Moment, Machine, in 2005. Episodes of this show focus on the historical ramifications of a specific individual’s interaction with a specific technology. Ellis took over as host of Digging for the Truth in 2007 and In Harm’s Way in 2008. Ellis worked as a news anchor for KEYE-TV in Austin, Texas, from 2011 until 2014, when he left to pursue documentaries full-time.
