Richard Hatch Borneo
When Hatch first appeared on Survivor in Borneo, he was a corporate trainer and consultant for his own company (2000). Onscreen, he came out as gay, went naked, and used resources to catch edible sea creatures underwater. To ensure the all-Tagi competition, he formed an alliance with his remaining Tagi tribe members. Hatch and Hawk were denied the right to vote at a Tribal Council, so Boesch and Wiglesworth voted Hawk out and kept Hatch for the time being.
Hatch strategically withdrew from the season’s final Immunity challenge, winning the “Sole Survivor” title, $1 million, and a Pontiac Aztek SUV by a 4-3 jury vote at the final Tribal Council. Three Tagi tribe jury members voted for Hatch, while the other three jury members voted for Kelly. Hatch received the vote of Pagong member Greg Buis, giving him a total of four votes.
Richard Hatch Sue Hawk
Hatch, Rudy Boesch, and Sue Hawk plotted to vote Wiglesworth out as four players remained, but the plan was scrapped when Wiglesworth won an Individual Immunity challenge called “Fallen Comrades,” a trivia quiz mini-game about eliminated contestants. Hatch and Hawk each received two votes at a Tribal Council. Hatch and Hawk were disallowed to vote in a tiebreaker; Boesch and Wiglesworth voted Hawk out and kept Hatch for the time being.
Hatch strategically dropped out of the season’s final Immunity challenge as one of three remaining players, leaving Boesch and Wiglesworth to compete. Wiglesworth defeated Boesch in the challenge, voted Boesch out, and kept Hatch in the hopes of defeating him in the finals. Sue finished fourth. Hawk famously referred to Kelly as a “rat” and Richard as a “snake” during the final Council. Hawk went on to say that in Mother Nature, a snake would eat a rat.
Richard Hatch Jail
Hatch was convicted of domestic assault and sentenced to one year probation in September 2001. He appealed his conviction and sentence, which were overturned on February 5, 2002, in a county superior court. On January 25, 2006, he was convicted of two counts of attempted tax evasion and one count of signing a false tax return for failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes. He served his 51-month sentence in federal prison, specifically at the Federal Correctional Institution in Morgantown, and was released on three-year probation. One year after his release, Survivor host/producer Jeff Probst and producer Mark Burnett revealed that Hatch was a strong candidate to reappear as a villain in the twentieth season, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains.
Hatch, however, was still under house arrest at the time and was unable to re-participate because prosecutors refused him permission. From March to December 2011, he was sentenced to an additional nine months in prison for failing to amend his 2000 and 2001 tax returns. He was found not guilty of seven fraud charges stemming from Horizon Bound, a charity that provides outdoor activities for troubled youth.
