Madeley has publicly backed former Prime Minister Tony Blair. In an interview with The Guardian in 2001, he stated that the UK had improved under New Labour, named independent MP Martin Bell as his favorite politician, and expressed support for the euro. He supported the Iraq War, claiming that international law was “incredibly complicated” on the subject. Blair’s “self-appointed apologist” and “yapping Pekingese” have all been used to describe him. In a 2006 interview, Madeley named Cuban leader Fidel Castro as the person he despises the most.

Madeley told The Guardian in 2008 that his father was physically abusive without provocation. He estimated that his father beat him with a stick about 25 times over the course of two years. Richard was ten years old when he received his final and most vicious beating. His father ordered him to take off his shirt before hitting him “repeatedly, dementedly, with a stick.” His wounds kept him from attending school. The abuse stopped when his mother, who had been out at work and was unaware of her husband’s harsh discipline, told him that if it happened again, she would call the police; Madeley stated that after this, his father apologized fully and he never hit Richard again.
In 2014, Madeley said he was surprised by the level of media interest the beatings generated, “because to me, it was abnormal not to be hit back then”, and said he almost regretted writing about it in his 2008 book Fathers and Sons, noting to the general public the beatings are not the defining thing about his father, and calling his father “fun, bright, warm and tactile”. Geoffrey Madeley, Christopher Madeley’s father, had physically abused him.
The couple has been involved in other projects while working on their daytime show. Before presenting the last two seasons of the game show, quiz show Connections, the daytime quiz Runway, and a series on the world’s wildest weather, Eye of the Storm, Madeley and Finnigan won on the season finale of season 2 of a TV version of the classic board game Cluedo. He presented the unaired pilot of the home video show You’ve Been Framed and hosted the ITV1 show Fortune: Million Pound Giveaway.
On 14 December 2007, Madeley hosted the news quiz Have I Got News for You, and she later appeared as a guest panellist in May 2011. On BBC Radio 5 Live, he filled in for Richard Bacon. Madeley also filled in for Dawn Patrol host Sarah Kennedy during the week of April 27-30, 2009, for Zo Ball for two months until February 27, and for Chris Evans’ Breakfast Show on numerous occasions, all on BBC Radio 2. In April 2009, he appeared on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, and in January 2010, he appeared on BBC Question Time. Madeley appeared on the eighth season of Who Do You Think You Are? in 2011, tracing his mother’s ancestors back to Canada and the United States. Madeley hosted his own show on Radio 2 called Madeley on Sunday (previously Made on Sunday), which filled in for Terry Wogan’s Weekend Wogan during Wogan’s vacation. Wogan died in January 2016, and Madeley’s show took over as a temporary replacement. Madeley and Michael Ball shared the slot beginning in April 2016, with Madeley presenting for about 10 weeks per year and Ball taking the rest.
