He attended Butte College and played quarterback after graduating from high school. He was the backup quarterback for Butte when the team won the junior college national championship with a 12-0 record in 2008. He broke the school record for total offense the following year as a starter, passing for 2,219 yards and 19 touchdowns. He was also recognized academically.
In 2011, he started the season as the second-string quarterback and finished with seven starts.
