Susan Landau, the daughter of actor Martin Landau, suggested Harold try acting in 1997. He dropped out of the San Francisco Art Institute and moved to Los Angeles, where he began a three-year intensive drama training program. He was accepted into the Actors Conservatory Program at A Noise Within, a classical theater company. Harold made his stage debut as “Bunny” in Gillian Plowman’s Me and My Friends. Harold’s career began in 2000, when he was cast as Brian Kinney, a central character on Showtime’s popular gay drama Queer as Folk. Harold made his New York theatrical debut in Uncle Bob with George Morfogen during the summer hiatus from Queer as Folk. Harold appeared in Wake in 2003.
In 2006, Harold played Special Agent Graham Kelton in the short-lived FOX series Vanished. Harold also appeared in two episodes of HBO’s Deadwood as Wyatt Earp and twice on CBS’s The Unit as Wyatt Earp. Harold worked as an associate producer on the documentary Scott Walker: 30 Century Man with David Bowie. On November 15, 2006, Gale Harold returned to the New York stage as Dr. Cukrowicz in Tennessee Williams’ play Suddenly Last Summer (“Dr. Sugar”). Blythe Danner and Carla Gugino co-starred with Harold in the Roundabout Theatre repertory production, which had a limited Off-Broadway run through January 20, 2007.
On May 18, 2008, he appeared as Jackson Braddock, Susan Mayer’s love interest, in the fourth season finale of Desperate Housewives. Six months after a serious motorcycle accident, Harold returned to the show to play Jackson on the May 3, 2009, episode. Harold appeared in Tennessee Williams’ Orpheus Descending at Theater/Theatre in Los Angeles in January and February 2010, alongside Denise Crosby and ex-model Claudia Mason. The Los Angeles Times called his performance “brilliant,” and added, “Harold, ideally cast, beautifully ignites with Crosby, whose unconventional interpretation is an affecting revelation.”
Harold also appeared as the main character in two films in 2011, Low Fidelity and Rehab. Harold appeared in three episodes of Defiance’s first season. Syfy renewed Defiance for a 13-episode second season on May 10, 2013, to air in 2014. Harold made a cameo appearance in the episode “Put the Damage On” during the second season. Harold appeared in the short film The Spirit Game in 2013. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was made available online on September 2, 2014. Harold mentioned that he was currently working on a Civil War project called Field of Lost Shoes.
Harold took part in several projects in 2014, including the short film Thirst, directed by Rachel McDonald and which premiered on August 7, 2014, at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. as well as the film Echo Park, which premiered on June 14, 2014, at the Los Angeles Film Festival. He also appeared in the science fiction/action film Andron. Harold co-founded Filmmakers First Fund, a Los Angeles-based film fund and studio space dedicated to artists with full-length narrative and documentary film projects in the early stages of development, in 2020. Rachel Lears received a 2020 grant for her documentary To the End (2022), which follows Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rhiana Gunn-Wright, Varshini Prakash, and Alexandra Rojas as they fight for the Green New Deal.
